• Independent Design House/Original Design Manufacturer (ODM/IDH) smartphone shipments grew 6% YoY in the first half of 2024 (January-June) driven by strong shipments from Chinese OEMs.
• Longcheer and Mobiwire were the fastest-growing ODM/IDH companies. Longcheer witnessed high growth due to strong shipments from Chinese brands, especially Xiaomi, Huawei and Motorola, as well as Samsung. Mobiwire’s growth was mainly driven by Transsion group brands.
• Among the top six ODM/IDH companies, TINNO Mobile and CHINO-E also posted growth. TINNO Mobile’s growth was mostly driven by Lenovo Group and Transsion group brands, while CHINO-E witnessed growth thanks to Huawei and HONOR.

The global smartphone market saw a 7% YoY growth in its overall shipments in the first half of 2024. The outsourced-design smartphone shipments also witnessed growth, with Independent Design House/Original Design Manufacturer (ODM/IDH) shipments growing 6% YoY in H1 2024, according to the latest data from Counterpoint Research. The growth of Chinese OEMs in the local market as well as some overseas markets was the prime reason for this ODM/IDH growth.

Commenting on the market dynamics, Senior Research Analyst Ivan Lam said, “The top eight ODM/IDH companies, comprising both Tier-1 and Tier 2 companies, captured more than 97% of overall design outsourced shipments. Longcheer maintained its momentum, growing its shipments by 50% YoY during the first half. Longcheer witnessed high growth due to strong shipments from Chinese brands, especially Xiaomi, Huawei and Motorola, as well as Samsung. Xiaomi saw improved performance in multiple key regions, such as China, India, Caribbean and Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. Huaqin experienced a decline in smartphone shipments in the first half, but its wearable, PC and server orders saw a soaring demand. We believe Huaqin will witness increasing smartphone orders in the second half of 2024. Wingtech also witnessed a decline due to reduced shipments from key Chinese OEMs. Overall, these three ODMs captured three-fourths of total ODM shipments during the first half.”

Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh added, “Among the Tier-2 ODM/IDH companies, Tinno managed to hold its position, witnessing an 8% growth in shipments, driven by Transsion and Lenovo brands. However, Mobiwire was the fastest-growing Tier-2 company, witnessing a 50% YoY growth. The prime reason for this growth was shipments from Transsion group brands, which contributed two-thirds of Mobiwire shipments. CHINO-E also registered double-digit growth, driven by growth in Huawei and HONOR shipments. Other ODM/IDHs that witnessed growth were Fortuneship and Sprocomm.”

Counterpoint forecasts a 5% YoY rise in 2024 global smartphone shipments, mainly driven by emerging markets. Further, Counterpoint expects the ODM/IDH share in the global smartphone market to remain around 41% in 2024. The 5G smartphone penetration is poised to grow in the coming period driven by device launches in lower price bands, a segment where the role of ODM/IDHs will be important.
