Global passenger vehicle (PV) infotainment system sales grew 3% YoY in 2024, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Passenger Vehicle Infotainment Tracker. The market aligned with the overall PV market's performance. Although the automotive sector made a strong recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, it faced challenges in 2024 due to rising inflation, geopolitical instability, and higher interest rates on loans to purchase vehicles.

China, USA, and Europe collectively accounted for nearly 70% of the infotainment system market in 2024. However, Southeast Asia (SEA), North America Others (Canada and Mexico), and the Middle East & Africa (MEA) are expected to be the fastest-growing markets during 2025 - 2035, as car sales rise in these regions and OEMs introduce the latest features. Furthermore, the entry of Chinese OEMs is intensifying competition in these markets, pushing existing players to offer enhanced features to remain competitive.

Commenting on supplier dynamics, Associate Director Greg Basich said, “Looking at the market globally, international suppliers like Harman and Panasonic lost some market share as Chinese suppliers gained prominence. BYD Electronics was the fastest-growing supplier among the global top 10, driven by the growth of BYD cars in both the domestic Chinese market and international markets.”

Basich further noted, “Some automakers, like Tesla and Leapmotor, are pursuing vertical integration strategies to assemble infotainment systems, aiming for better supply chain control. This approach may pose challenges for traditional infotainment system suppliers, potentially leading to consolidation within the supplier base as the industry transitions toward software-defined vehicles.”

Discussing future trends, Senior Analyst Soumen Mandal stated, “As the automotive industry moves toward software-defined vehicles, we are seeing the entire cockpit, including the infotainment system, being controlled by multi-function electronic control units (ECU) with more powerful processors, moving away from traditional single-function ECU-based control systems.”

Mandal added, “In the future, we expect to see more high-performance computing (HPC)-based systems integrating both cockpit and ADAS features. This shift has been attracting global chipset players like Qualcomm, NVIDIA, MediaTek, and Samsung. Additionally, it will be fascinating to watch the growing competition among traditional MCU suppliers like NXP, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and STMicro, global chipset players, new entrants like SemiDrive and Rockchip, and OEMs pursuing vertical integration like Tesla, NIO, and Xpeng.”

Global infotainment system sales are projected to grow at a CAGR of 3% from 2025 to 2035, surpassing 105 million units annually. Since each car typically includes one infotainment system, growth will generally align with PV sales. However, the industry will transition from single-function ECU-based systems to domain controller-based and eventually HPC-based systems.

Commenting on center infotainment display size trends, Vice President Ross Young remarked, “We are witnessing a transition in display size ranges, with the number of screens in the 5 inch-10 inch category declining and those in the 10 inch-15 inch increasing. While premium and luxury players are offering center infotainment displays over 15 inches, their market share remains less than 1.5%.”

With the increasing adoption of connected infotainment features and safety functions, the demand for larger crucial information displays and digital instrument clusters continues to grow. Similarly, while most passenger vehicle center infotainment displays currently use LCD technology, the automotive industry is gradually adopting OLED and MiniLED LCD technology, though this trend is primarily limited to premium and luxury vehicles.
