Transferring eSIMs between smartphones is often a cumbersome task. Whether it is switching from one iPhone or Android smartphone to another, or transitioning between an iPhone and Android, users have been struggling with QR quotes and lengthy processes. At MWC 2024, Thales introduced a seamless and simplified solution aimed at alleviating this pain point. Mohit Agrawal, Associate Director at Counterpoint, met with Pauline Pinzuti, Marketing Manager at Thales, who offered us a sneak peek into the company’s ingenious solution that streamlines the eSIM transfer process.
• No need for QR codes anymore.
• eSIM activation happens directly using the carrier's app.
• Users simply need to log in, select their plan, click a button to download the eSIM profile and activate it.
• Upon logging into the app on a new smartphone, it can automatically detect existing eSIM profiles on another phone.
• It can then send a prompt to the old phone to transfer the eSIM profile onto a new device in simple steps.
• This also works across operating systems – from Android to iOS, and vice-versa.
• In case your old device is misplaced or broken, the app can trigger the download of a new eSIM profile on your new device.
• This solution eliminates the need to access your old, broken device.
• Here the backend system generates a new profile upon app activation, thus ensuring seamless connectivity.
• This innovative eSIM transfer solution marks a significant advancement in user convenience.
• Transfer of eSIM from one device to another has historically posed challenges, hindering consumers from transitioning from physical SIMs to eSIMs effectively.
• Challenges associated with eSIM transfer encompass technical requirements, connectivity issues, device compatibility, software updates, account verification, and user experience management.
• Thales has successfully developed a seamless user experience for eSIM transfers, facilitating smooth transitions not only within the same ecosystem but also between iOS and Android devices. This user-friendly approach is expected to accelerate the adoption of eSIM technology.
