SDC Regains Top Spot in Foldable Smartphone Panels
Samsung Display (SDC) reclaimed the #1 position in the foldable smartphone panel market in Q2 2025 with a 53% share, according to the latest Quarterly Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment and Technology Report from Counterpoint Research. SDC’s return to the top spot follows a temporary dip to third place in Q1, when Huawei’s strong product ramp boosted shipments from suppliers BOE and Visionox. For the full year 2025, SDC is projected to capture 46% of global foldable panel shipments for smartphones.

Shipments of clamshell panels are expected to decline 23% YoY in 2025, while those of in- fold panels are projected to increase 13% YoY. Multi-fold panels will exhibit the strongest growth, with their shipments expected to rise 28% YoY. Although the clamshell form factor accounted for more than half of shipments in 2024, smartphone OEMs have made a strong push to refine the in-folding format with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Fold7 and Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Apple is also expected to enter this seg- ment next year, with a new phone fea- turing a 7.6” in-folding OLED panel and a 5.4” OLED panel for the cover display. The main display will be manufactured by SDC and will benefit from the latest CoE (Color filter on Encapsulation) tech- nology, which eliminates the need for a polarizer and increases efficiency. SDC is expanding its A4 line and is targeting a monthly capacity of 30,000 substrates by Q2 2026. Procurement for Apple’s foldable phone is expected to account for over 40% of SDC’s total foldable panel shipments in 2026.

Apple’s first foldable phone in 2026 is expected to contribute to an 89% YoY increase in shipments for the in-folding category. Procurement volume for Apple is also expected to double the following year, which, combined with new flagship foldable phones from other OEMs, will lead to in-folding panel shipments growing 48% YoY in 2027. Double-digit growth will continue in 2028 and 2029 as well. SDC is expected to remain the top supplier of foldable smartphone panels throughout the forecast, with BOE in second place.
