Huawei’s Pura X Max Indicates Strong Early Demand for Wide Book-type Foldables in China

  • In China, Huawei’s April-launched Pura X Max saw strong momentum in its first five weeks and sold more than the Mate X7, Pura X and nova Flip S over their comparable launch windows.
  • On a cumulative five-week basis, the Pura X Max’s sales were 29% higher than those of the Mate X7, 49% higher than Pura X and 296% higher than nova Flip S.
  • With a 5.4-inch cover display and 7.7-inch inner display, the Pura X Max extends Huawei’s wider-screen foldable line into a larger book-type format.
  • This early response points to practical interest in wider inner screens for video, reading, document viewing, AI-assisted creation and multi-app use.

Huawei’s Pura X Max opened with a robust first five-week performance after launch in China, according to Counterpoint Research’s Foldable Market Tracker and China Weekly Sales Tracker. Over the comparable launch window, the model sold more than several recent Huawei foldable models, including the Mate X7, Pura X and nova Flip S. The data is still early, but it gives Huawei a useful read on demand for wider book-type foldables, particularly among users looking for a larger screen without moving fully into the tablet territory.

The comparison is most visible on a cumulative basis. During the first five weeks, the Pura X Max’s sales were 29% higher than those of the Mate X7, 49% higher than Pura X and 296% higher than nova Flip S. That is a notable result for a new layout, especially in a foldable market where many recent launches have focused more on thinness, weight and hinge refinement than on changing the screen experience itself.

Huawei introduced the Pura X Max in China in late April, building on the wider-screen foldable idea first tested through the Pura X lineup. The device has a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.7-inch inner display, giving users more room than conventional narrow book-type foldables. When opened, it sits closer to a compact tablet experience, while still being portable enough for daily smartphone use.

Huawei’s foldable portfolio has also become more diverse over the past two years, covering clamshell, book-type, wide book-type and tri-fold designs. The Pura X introduced Chinese consumers to a wider foldable screen format, while the Mate X7 reinforced Huawei’s position in the premium book-type segment. The Pura X Max brings these two directions together in a flagship foldable built around a wider horizontal layout.

This matters because the foldable market is still looking for its next clear product direction. Thinness, durability, hinge design and battery life remain important, but software experience and screen layout are playing a larger role in how consumers judge foldable devices. As AI-assisted smartphone workflows become more demanding, larger inner displays could help make video, reading, document viewing, content creation and multi-app productivity easier to use on mobile devices.

Commenting on the device, Associate Director Liz Lee said, “The Pura X Max is important because it shows that wide foldables are not just a design experiment. The early sales indicate that consumers are starting to find more practical uses for a wider inner display, especially for video, reading, document viewing, AI-assisted creation and multi-app tasks. For foldables, the next stage of competition will be less about whether the device folds and more about whether the larger screen creates daily value.”

It is too early to say how far the format can scale, but the Pura X Max gives Huawei one of the first meaningful market tests of a wide book-type foldable in China. The early response gives Huawei useful market feedback as the wider foldable market continues to look for the next big thing in large-screen experiences.
